Shanghai, November 18, 2019 — WACKER will be presenting several new products and technologies for paints and adhesives at Chinacoat 2019. One of them is the new NEXIVA® dispersible polymer powder for interior wall paints in powder form. The technology does not require the addition of biocides and offers key advantages when it comes to storing and transporting paints. The company will also show a new technology developed for anti-graffiti and poster release coatings. The formulations which are based on WACKER’s SILRES® BS products are easy to apply, do not need to be reapplied and will not damage the substrate to remove graffiti. In addition, stickers that have been pasted onto walls can easily be removed as well. Other WACKER highlights at Chinacoat 2019 include HDK® H21, a highly hydrophobic pyrogenic silica, and CAVAMAX® cyclodextrin complexes for natural antimicrobial solutions. Chinacoat 2019 takes place in Shanghai, China from November 18 to 20.
Most wall paints are produced using water-based binders or raw materials. When used in paints, however, water provides a favorable environment for microbes and bacteria. In order to kill prevent the growth of these organisms, the paints are typically formulated with biocides to make them last longer. There is a problem with biocide use, however: once the paint has been applied to the wall and begins to dry, liquid components evaporate, allowing biocides to escape into the air. In some people, biocides, especially isothiazolinones, can trigger allergic reactions.
By developing NEXIVA®, WACKER has now created a technology for the production of biocide-free paints. This new dispersible polymer powder is suitable for producing interior wall paints in either liquid or powder form. Paint manufacturers can use NEXIVA® to create individual paint formulations, just as they can with traditional binders in dispersion form. Powder paints remain stable, even without the addition of preservatives. Depending on manufacturer and customer preferences, water for redispersing the paints does not have to be added until just prior to application, thus eliminating the need for adding biocides during production. Thanks to the polymers, the paint adheres well and has good spreading properties. In addition, paints are easier to transport and store when they are in powder form, as they weigh less, for instance, and can be packaged differently from liquid paints. They can be kept in bags, providing better use of space during transport and storage, and the dry form is much safer in case of packaging damage or leakage during transport. Unlike traditional wall paints, powdered versions do not freeze in the cold, nor do they thicken when exposed to heat.
Anti-Graffiti and Poster Release Coatings based on SILRES® BS
WACKER will also showcase a formulation consisting of several different silicone products that cures to form a permanent film upon exposure to moisture. All formulations are based on WACKER’s SILRES® BS products. They do not need to be reapplied, will not damage the substrate to remove graffiti and are easy to apply: just spray them on or paint them on with a roller or brush. A single treatment is generally enough. When expose to atmospheric humidity in room temperature, surface is no longer sticky after one hour and will be reliably protected from graffiti and posters after a curing time of one day.
The cured film features an extremely low surface energy, which means that other substances adhere either poorly to its surface or not at all. No matter what kind of paint is used, solvent or water-based markers or paints, graffiti can be easily removed with water or a normal tissue, and stickers, posters or signs either fall off on their own or can be peeled off effortlessly. The technology can be used in indoor and outdoor buildings or hand-painted wall for children.
HDK® H21 Anti-Sagging and Anti-Sedimentation Additive
HDK® H21 pyrogenic silica has been designed as an additive for adjusting the flow and anti-settling properties of polar systems. Despite its highly hydrophobic or water-repellent properties, the silica can be incorporated rapidly and efficiently into polar formulations. HDK® H21 has a pronounced rheological effect in epoxy-, vinyl ester- and polyurethane-based adhesives and coatings, allowing customers to produce non-sag and non-hard settle formulations. The product is perfect for use in industrial prime coatings and high-strength industrial adhesives.
CAVAMAX® Cyclodextrin for Natural Antimicrobial Solutions
Cyclodextrin from WACKER can encapsulate volatile essential oils to reduce their volatility, extends their release over time and improves their stability and solubility in water. For example, use essential oil- cyclodextrin complex to replace chemicals in coating application as a natural biocide or insect repellent. By offering an equivalent level of performance as traditional solutions, this new solution can also provide pleasant sensation experience.
